Bring the props!

The goal of your senior portrait experience is to document who you are right now, in this very moment! We want to highlight your unique style and personality, as well as your hobbies and things you’re passionate about. What’s the best way to do that? Bring the props!

I always encourage my seniors and their parents to reach out to set up an in person consultation a few weeks prior to the shoot at my downtown studio. This gives us the opportunity to know each other better and collaborate on how to best approach your session. I want to know who you are, what you do, what you’re passionate about, what makes you laugh, and all about your goals. This gives me a chance to start thinking creatively and we can discuss locations, wardrobe, hair and makeup options, and how we can incorporate any props that will help better tell your story. This also establishes the expectation of what we can expect from each other during the session, which in my experience helps to ease any concerns or feelings of uncertainty about the day of, allowing us to get down to business with a kickass session!

So what kind of props should I bring? The kind that highlight your passions, hobbies, and interests. Do you play a sport or multiple sports? Let’s catch you in action on the court or field. Maybe you’re a soccer goalie blocking the ball, you play golf and we capture you swinging your club, or you’re amazing at tennis and we highlight that serve. Maybe you like to get down and dirty on your dirt bike, you’re a badass on a motorcycle, or you want to incorporate the classic car that is more your style. Do you love animals? Maybe you volunteer at the animal shelter and want to include your rescue pet. Maybe you ride dressage and want some action shots with your horse. Is your passion music? Maybe you play an instrument in a rock band, orchestra, jazz band, or marching band. Do you love to read? Let’s include your favorite book, if you can choose just one, or better yet the whole collection! Is astronomy your jam? Maybe we’re shooting under the stars with your telescope. Perhaps you love to swim, being near, in, and/or around the water? Water backgrounds are one of my top requested locations and I have 5 different spots depending on the feel and look you’re going for. Just know that most likely both of us will be wading in to get the right shots and catch you in your element!

Even if you don’t have a main hobby, but you want to incorporate something that accentuates your playful side we have the options of the childhood pleasures of bubbles and glitter. Are you starting to get the picture? Bring ALL the props!

As always reach out with any questions and be sure to plan ahead as I book up quickly for the summer months! Together we will find the perfect senior portrait experience for you! Contact Crystal Madsen
