When Sidney and I met at her high school senior portrait consultation at my downtown Spokane studio, she was very clear and adamant on what she wanted out of her experience. She wanted loud, unique, busy and colorful senior photos. I believe her exact words were “I don’t want what anyone else has. I want my pictures to be different.” It was obvious that she has been planning her senior portraits for quite a while. She was actually the first senior to book her session of the year. Her mom told me she had been planning for this since we did their family session 5 years ago!!

As soon as she asked if I’d be down for shooting at the Spokane County Fair, I knew we were both in for a treat. I knew I could deliver dynamic and colorful images to meet her expectations. The tricky part on the day of the session was waiting for the sun to go down enough to capture the glowing lights of the rides and games. So while we waited, we hopped onto the yo-yo swing ride. I knew I wanted to blur the background to emphasize the movement, which meant I needed a slow shutter-speed. What I didn’t realize was how bumpy the ride was and how much my swing would sway! This was a tricky shot! After 25 attempts, we scored a few winners just before the ride ended. With the help of my guru-assistant Kayli, we scored a fun behind-the-scenes video. You can see her adding some extra life to the story in the background of one of the images posted.
Once we hopped off of the carnival ride, it was time to make some magic. We had so many colorful options surrounding us: a vibrant ferris wheel, fast moving zipper and scrambler, the massive skydiver, and even the Gravitron (at least that’s what it was called in the 90’s). It was the perfect playground to achieve Sidney’s vision of a fun and colorful senior photo shoot at the fair! We grabbed some cotton candy and some popcorn, lit her up with some speedlights and made senior portrait magic.
And can I just go ahead and comment on Sidney KILLING it on her 70’s themed wardrobe? I don’t know if anything speaks to me more than a young woman speaking her own language and wearing non-traditional outfits. Whether it be on a daily basis or in senior photos, making a confident statement with bold clothing choices will always get a fist bump from me ladies.
Do what Sidney did and call me in May to book your Spokane high school senior photos! I fill up quickly and would hate to turn down your request for a fair themed senior portrait session.
